12-year-old Marshall Verdoes dreamed of playing drums in a rock group, so his older brother, Benjamin, devised a scheme to give their band together a shot at the big time. Through a combination of oddball marketing, charisma, and a few catchy tunes – the plan succeeded. Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, a quirky indie rock band from Seattle quickly gained national recognition and created a wave of momentum. After a frenzy of touring and recording MSHVB burned out and returned to a stark reality waiting for them.
I Don’t Feel Like Have a Choice finds the brothers after a long hiatus, as they prepare to relaunch the band with an anniversary show exactly 14 years after the “World Premiere Show” that started it all. Marshall, once a teenager homeschooled in the back of a tour van, floats between jobs and apartments, waiting to play shows again. Benjamin, married with a new baby, pays Marshall’s rent and tries to stay connected. He initiates the second attempt to provide his younger brother with a sustainable living through music. The film explores poverty, and race, along with issues of accessibility for the neurodivergent in the arts. What began as an experiment to beat the odds, became something much more complicated.
